DevOps Write For Us

DevOps is a set of practices, tools, and cultural philosophies that automate and integrate processes between software development and IT teams. The focus is team empowerment, cross-team communication and collaboration, and technology automation.

The DevOps movement began around 2007 when the software development and IT operations communities expressed concerns about the traditional software development model, in which the developers who wrote the code worked separately from the operations that implemented and supported the code. DevOps, a combination of development and operations, integrates these disciplines into one continuous process.

How does DevOps work?

A DevOps team includes developers and IT departments working together throughout the product lifecycle to increase software delivery speed and quality. It’s a new way of working, a cultural shift that significantly impacts teams and the organizations they work for.

Under a DevOps model, the development and operations teams are no longer “siloed.” Sometimes, these two teams are merged into one, where engineers work throughout the application lifecycle (from development and test to deployment and operations) and have various cross-functional skills.

DevOps teams use tools to automate and accelerate processes, which helps increase reliability. A DevOps toolchain helps teams master key DevOps fundamentals, including continuous integration, delivery, automation, and collaboration.

DevOps values sometimes apply to teams other than development. When security teams adopt a DevOps approach, security is an active and integrated part of the development process. It is called DevSecOps.

The DevOps lifecycle

Due to the continuous nature of DevOps, professionals use the infinite loop to show how the stages of the DevOps lifecycle relate to each other. Even though it appears to be sequential, the loop symbolizes the need for constant collaboration and iterative improvement throughout the lifecycle.

The DevOps lifecycle consists of eight stages representing the processes, skills, and tools required for development (on the left side of the loop) and operations (on the right side). At each stage, teams work together and communicate to maintain alignment, speed, and quality.

Benefits of DevOps

Speed

Move at high velocity so you can innovate for customers faster, adapt to changing markets better, and grow more efficient at driving business results. The DevOps model enables your developers and operations teams to achieve these results. For example, microservices and continuous delivery let teams take ownership of services and then release updates to them quicker.

Rapid Delivery

Increase the frequency and pace of releases so you can innovate and improve your product faster. The quicker you can release new features and fix bugs, the faster you can respond to your customers’ needs and build competitive advantage. Continuous integration and continuous delivery are practices that automate the software release process, from build to deploy.

Reliability

Ensure the quality of application updates and infrastructure changes so you can reliably deliver at a more rapid pace while maintaining a positive experience for end users. Use practices like continuous integration and continuous delivery to test that each change is functional and safe. Monitoring and logging practices help you stay informed of performance in real-time.

Scale

Operate and manage your infrastructure and development processes at scale. Automation and consistency help you manage complex or changing systems efficiently and with reduced risk. For example, infrastructure as code helps you manage your development, testing, and production environments in a repeatable and more efficient manner.
